I recently got to go to one of my favorite places in Ottawa… Shanghai Restaurant, located on Somerset West, doesn’t only have the best Chinese food ever, but it also has the funnest entertainment. For example, every Saturday night, they have a really fun karaoke party. Their super talented chef doubles as China Doll to host the weekly event, and Oh. My. Gosh, it’s amazing! I’ve been to karaoke night a few times now, one of them being my birthday party a couple years ago. I will never forget that night, all the singing, amazing food, amazing company, perfect choice of location! I put a link to their website in my blog, but first, let me ramble a bit about them…
The places (stores, restaurants, etc.) that I like going to the most are the ones that make me feel the most at home. The fact that Shanghai is a family owned business is one of the reasons why the place is so very welcoming and comfortable, they make me feel at home every time I go there. Granted, my mom being friends with the staff does help, but I can always tell that all of the other guests also feel the same way. Over the years, I have seen multiple events going on in the restaurant (for example, the bachelorette last night), and it’s always noticeable how much fun they are all having. The chef / karaoke hostess China Doll, along with the rest of the Kwan family is quite amazing; I am always so touched by how friendly they are. Yesterday, I felt bad when I gave a confusing drink order, but they wound up serving me such a delicious non-alcoholic fruity beverage. They put together exactly what I was craving, it was as if they read my mind! I even ordered a second one!
Being there for karaoke, watching China Doll perform, hearing everyone sing, it’s always such a great experience. I have also been there during the day… whole different environment! I find it super cool that they can entirely change the atmosphere around… calm family restaurant by day, and wild, fun karaoke by night, and that is only Saturdays, there are so many other events on other days of the week! Quite the chameleon of a place!
