I do seriously adore this show because of its’ plot, but I also really love it for more serious reasons as well. Having come out of the closet eight years ago, I have seen the world come a long way in openness and acceptance, but we do still have some ways to go. So, having this mainstream TV show on air that portrays so many LGBT characters is very cool. Normalizing LGBT-ness if you will, is so important for the world.
The first three seasons of the Netflix series were so enthralling that Gen and I watched it all at once when we discovered the show. Now that there are new episodes posted, I did a little research and found information that I wanna share. I’ve always been a very loyal fan to those celebrities that I like and admire, so seeing these familiar faces in more than one place always makes me very happy. Back during season two of F.R.I.E.N.D.S, there was an episode with a lesbian wedding, where Ross’ ex-wife Carol marries her girlfriend Susan. During one of the scenes, Phoebe is asked to dance by a wedding guest, who is none other than Lea DeLaria, otherwise known as Big Boo in Orange is the New Black. So cool!
I’ll admit that I didn’t know all that much about DeLaria before, but knowing this prompted me to do a bit more digging… and, as it turns out, DeLaria is actually a very well known LGBT icon, having been the first out comedian on TV. Since then, she has gotten a lot of acting roles, and even become a famous Jazz musician! Crazy impressive! Also, I gotta say, her website… so many video clips to watch and songs to listen to, it’s almost addictive! I can’t even begin to explain how moved I was with all her work, very inspiring. Lea is, in my humble opinion, a perfect role model for the LGBT community… she is so extremely down to earth and easy to relate to that I kept forgetting she’s actually a celebrity and not just a friend or acquaintance that I’d sit down and have a coffee with. Her unconventional style and willingness to be herself is so great and eye opening, definitely makes her a person to learn from.
