Supernanny is a TV show that has been very special to me and my life. When I was a teenager, I had no idea what I would do once I finished High School, and as time went, the pressure mounted. I mean, I definitely didn’t have the world’s best marks in school, but I guess they also weren’t the worst, so the decision was hard. To try and figure out what my next step would be, I looked at what my hobbies were and took it from there. Let’s be honest, I was a teenager, so the list wasn’t all that intriguing… TV, school, friends, MSN… all the usual suspects.
TV shows were definitely a big part of my after-school life, Dr. Phil, Oprah, F.R.I.E.N.D.S, Seinfeld… then comes the one that changed my life… Supernanny, I absolutely loved watching that show! I was so amazed every time that woman was able to turn around the lives of a family that needed her. Seeing these people not knowing what to do, get the help that they need always really touched me. As I’m sure I’ve talked about before, helping people has always been a passion of mine, so I needed to learn how to do something like Supernanny, something that would let me help make people happy, and wow, those kids, so cute! Thus came my big life choice, I would work with kids… Algonquin College … Carleton University … the next 6 years of my life!
Even now that I am no longer working in the field, I still love watching this show with Gen. The oh-so-famous naughty corner, all the house rules, setting boundaries, the bed time routine, the list goes on… and all of it makes so much sense, there is nothing Jo Frost can’t do, no family she can’t fix. Starting in 2005, Supernanny was filmed in the UK and lasted a whole seven years and was so successful that an American spin-off was made and lasted for yet another two years. Still watching reruns of the show now in 2016, these heartfelt stories never get old. I always love seeing how things change over time, and as this show started eleven years ago, things have definitely had a chance to change since then, so of course there is a Supernanny app out there for our smartphones now. This nifty little thing has parenting advice articles, video clips, a timer for the naughty corner, and lists of all the fun family places around your neighborhood. Very cool, don’t ya think?
