Ruby Rose

I recently came across an article (<— link to article) about the famous and currently very well known Ruby Rose. I first knew her only as Stella on Orange is the New Black, and only after that did I find out more about who she is. This article talks about her past with depression and her life with her fiancé, but what got to me the most was a short movie she released in July 2015, called Break Free. In this 5-minute video, she shows her metamorphosis from being a blonde feminine woman to what she is today. I find this short dialogue-free movie to be really powerful and well done, showing us how she ‘broke free’ from her previous self and became who she really is meant to be.

Identifying as genderfluid, Ruby Rose shows the world how a person’s gender identity can be so much more than merely female or male. I feel like the world is becoming much more open and accepting as I have written about before, but we do still have a ways to go. The reason why this topic is so important to me is that I really identify with her and this movie.. I also don’t consider myself the stereotypical female, for a few different reasons. When it comes to clothing and appearance, I have had a similar transformation over the years, from being a girly teenager to a more gender-neutral type. The gradual change was definitely challenging for me, but oh so worth it.
