Margarita, with a Straw

What a beautiful movie! A young woman living in India treks all the way to New York City to attend college, not letting her cerebral palsy (CP) get in her way whatsoever. An inspirational movie about courage, ambition, and persistence. Nothing’s gonna stop this woman! The main character Laila is played by the brilliant actress Kalki Koechlin, her entire performance completely blew me away! And the shocker? The actress doesn’t really have CP! I couldn’t believe it when I read this, because she was so incredibly convincing. Apparently she did a whole lot of preparation and research for a total of six months beforehand, quite the commitment she made for this role. After watching the movie, I was intrigued and decided to do a bit of research, and came across the script of an interview with Kalki Koechlin, and was fascinated when I found out where this role came from. The writer/director of this movie, Shonali Bose, based the role of Laila on her cousin! Pretty cool, I think! To read more of this article, you can click here.

As Laila begins her journey in New York, she settles into her new home with the help of her mother. Once she is set up and comfortable living in the big apple, Laila begins a long and exciting journey, developing her independence and exploring her relationships and sexuality. I truly think this movie touched on all the big life topics … disability, culture, sexuality, relationships, health, etc.. and all so well done. Such a masterpiece! Also have to add, the ending scene is so very touching, the perfect way to end such an amazing story, in my opinion. On a more personal note, this movie was so incredibly touching for me also because of how much I was able to relate to Laila, also having dealt with both disability and sexuality in my life, she is such an inspiration!
