I really really loved watching Julia Scotti perform on America’s Got Talent, she is quite the funny lady! When Gen first showed me a video of her stand up, I could not stop laughing. I’m pretty picky when it comes to these kinds of performances and reality shows, so my being this impressed is a good sign hehe. When watching someone perform, I find there’s always that big sigh of relief the first time the audience laughs… it’s like the sigh of relief that the person is in fact talented. In the case of this show, I think the sigh of relief comes when we see that Simon Cowell is happy. Well, when Julia first performed, Simon’s little smirk of approval came quite quickly, so it was clear that he was happy… not an east feat! His comments at the end made his opinion even more obvious:
“Genuinely made me laugh, because you were shocking”
“Obviously sweetie, its a yes”
I feel like when comedians make self-deprecating jokes, it can go either way, it can either be hard to watch or it can be really hilarious. The beauty with Julia Scotti I find, is that if she does make this type of joke, it is both funny and appealingly honest, making her more relate-able. Most of her first performance on America’s Got Talent was about her age, which is definitely something everyone can relate to in one way or another. Her jokes seemed to become more “shocking” as her show went on, meaning they were just slightly more inappropriate (still in a tasteful manner), which helped put the audience at ease. She most certainly is not afraid to be open and honest with everyone, which is very cool… especially the fact that she felt comfortable enough to share that she was actually born as a male, and then transitioned as an adult. This story of hers is in the video above, very touching!
