When I first watched Children of a Lesser God, I had no idea who Marlee Matlin was, all I knew was that my mom was convinced I needed to see her in this movie. Thank goodness she did, because it seriously changed my life. I think Marlee Matlin is one of the most talented actors I have ever seen, and trust me, I really have seen a lot of them. This movie blew me away! Matlin plays a woman who works as a janitor at a school for kids who are hard of hearing. She soon falls for a coworker, and the movie mainly deals with the relationship between her as a deaf woman and him as a hearing man. All the intense times they go through, both good and bad, are so well done. I don’t say this lightly… what a masterpiece! Marlee won an Oscar for Best Actress, breaking the record for youngest woman to win at the age of 21! Her very first movie even!
Seeing Marlee again in The L Word was so great. Not only was it one of my favorite actors, it was also a show about lesbians… a win/win, as they say. Her role as a tough, smart lesbian was so perfect, exactly the type of character that I think would suit her. What makes me think so? I’ve actually met her!! Back in high school, part of the reason my mom wanted me to see the movie so badly was because she was going to take me to meet her! Marlee was in town to give a speech at the Museum of Science and Technology for a Holocaust fundraiser they were doing. Wow!! Such an inspiring speaker and person, it was really quite the honor to hear about her life. Now, as she doesn’t talk in Children of a Lesser God, and she had an intrepretor help with her speech, I had no idea that she was such a talker in real life. Well, didn’t that make for an awkward meeting? When I was lucky enough to get a picture taken with her, and she asked how I was doing, I believe my eloquent response was “uhhh good…” with a gaping mouth. Yikes! A picture of me with the astounding Marlee Matlin is shown below… please, forgive my horrible hairstyle choice from a decade ago!
One of the most exciting days of my life!! 🙂
