Ever have a bad customer service experience and not known how to respond, or if you should respond at all? Well, this actually happened to me twice in the same day recently, while I was out with my friend Mark. Not to say this was the first time, because of course it has happened to me before within my lifetime, but these events were especially memorable. I would like to avoid giving out store names and causing hassles, however I would like to share these stories with my readers. While browsing around a mobile store, we asked for some help with finding cases for our specific phones. After spreading them out on the counter in front of us, she matter-of-factly said, “oh, well you won’t want this one”, while showing Mark a purple cell phone case. He quickly began explaining that purple is in fact his favorite color, and I chimed in by saying he would much rather prefer it than me.
We then made our way over to an ice cream shop to have a cold snack. While standing at the counter, we could not help but notice that the guy who was preparing an order happened to sneeze in the process. We waited patiently, hoping that he would proceed towards the sink to wash his hands, but sadly he did not. He simply kept on working. This made us somewhat concerned, however after debating and discussing, we still did not know what to do in this situation. I personally have never been faced with something like this before, and so I’ve never really stopped to think about what I would do. I think on instinct, a lot of people would say that something should be done in this case, in order to avoid it from happening again. But being the person that I am, I was too embarrassed to speak up. Why is that? Mainly I think it is because I prefer to avoid conflict, but also because I wouldn’t know how to go about doing something like this, and would not want a bad reaction, or even worse, no reaction at all.
Now, while the first story may not qualify as a horrible experience, the second one definitely seems to. I mean, who wants their server’s germs in their food/drink? Looking back, I do kind of wish I had politely said something. Maybe next time…
What would you do in these situations, and why?
