Social Media vs. Social Networking

I’m sure many of you have realized that Facebook doesn’t seem as popular as it used to. I remember back in the day, oh in grade 10 or 11 I’m guessing, when I was so excited and proud to show off my very own Facebook page. Yes, Facebook is still quite popular, don’t get me wrong, but does anyone ever wonder what is going on? What is happening to this social networking site that we all loved? Well, as I have been wondering about all of this for a while now, I did a little research. My first theory was that Facebook, that came out in 2004, has been followed by many other sites like Pinterest, Instagram, etc., so this must have made Facebook seem a little less new and exciting. Also! Just randomly, when catching up with an old friend from high school today, we got to talking about just this. He no longer uses Facebook and explained that it was because things have changed and with better sites like Tumblr, you ‘have the whole world at your fingertips’. What does this mean? I think it means that Tumblr gives its users more access to information from around the world.

But, by digging a little deeper, I found out that Facebook is not the only social networking site that is going through some changes. It turns out that lots of other sites mentioned before like Pinterest, and Instagram are also shifting focus, meaning they are less about people connecting with each other, but more dealing with social media. Honestly, I think up until today, I often used the terms social media and social networking interchangeably, because I never really understood the difference between the two. In case anyone else out there is in a similar boat, I shall explain… social networking is more about people connecting with each other with sites like Facebook, meeting new friends, finding old friends, what have you. But, social media is more focused on news, celebrity gossip, movies, and other things that are happening around the world. Nowadays, the sites that were created for social networking are more being used for social media (similar to what my friend said). In other words, we are less interested in our friends’ updates than in movie updates, for example.

This is also why people lately don’t post on Facebook as much, but more just scroll and look around at what’s out there. So, this begs the question, how are people staying in touch these days if not with Facebook posts?! Well, that’s were other new apps come into play. What are these, you ask? WhatsApp and Facebook messenger are two of these apps. With these new creations, people are able to still communicate on the internet, but in a more private manner. Things are always changing, aren’t they? I remember back in the day when the World Wide Web and CD’s were the new and exciting things… wow, how time flies!  I’m sure that by the time I have kids, all of these websites and apps will be old news as well. Anyways, I put a link to the article I read on the topic, in case your interest is peaked.
