I had an interesting experience a while back that I still think about from time to time, it consisted of quite a few long pauses and awkward comments being said.
Hearing bad news or tragic life stories from someone you know is never easy. Today someone I know unexpectedly shared a few sad personal stories with me. The relationship I have with this person, is mostly professional but also semi friendly I would say. Based on these facts, I was slightly surprised when these personal experiences were shared with me. So, the appropriate response did not come to me immediately. Awkward silence! When stuff like this happens, I often choose the quiet, strong but silent approach.
Listening is typically a very efficient strategy. Having worked within a social service agency for several years, I have gotten pretty good at this… OR there are times when I wind up making an awkward comment instead :-/
However, there are certain times and individuals that need more than this. It is always difficult to tell the difference between the two.
Starting interesting discussions is part of the reason I began blogging, so I would like to take this opportunity to ask my very few but important readers, what do you all think about this?
Is it better to just listen or is advice-giving the better option?
