What’s the Deal, Uber?

Wha-what? Come again? What’s happening?

Don’t ya hate when stuff like this happens? When things change and confuse the heck out of you?

I’ve been using Uber very loyally for over half a year now and have loved it every step of the way. What an awesome service they came up with! Of course, the one thing that kinda sucked was the surge pricing, making the prices higher during rush hour and such. I guess there’s a catch to every good thing, right? So, it was all still very worth it. It was all going swimmingly… I would get cheap rides all over the place, whenever I wanted, it was a good deal. Then, one late evening in September (AKA Wednesday, two days ago), as I ordered myself a ride home from Walmart, I got quite the shock when I saw the exact price that my trip would cost. Mark and I thought this was strange, but just went along with it. But, when this happened again during the week, I started really wondering what was going on. I turned to my trusty friend Google and found out that this was actually a new thing Uber is doing… giving riders the exact fee that they will be getting ahead of time. So, this is instead of giving a range or percentage during surge pricing, that had been working so well for oh-so long. Reading opinions online was fun! Some people love this, because well, it’s an exact prediction, great for budgeting and planning and stuff. THEN, there are the people who hate it because it apparently “lacks transparency”, as in this number seems (to us) like it comes out of nowhere.
