When I first heard Meryl Streep’s speech tonight, I couldn’t help but write about it, because well, wow! I’ve always been in awe of Meryl Streep’s performances… August Osage County, The Bridges of Madison County, Florence Foster Jenkins, Doubt, and who could forget Ricki and the Flash where she acted with her daughter Mamie Gummer! What a wonderful movie! But, seriously, I had to stop myself from going on and on with that list… there is no end to her list of masterpieces. Always amazing, no matter what the role is. So, I was not at all surprised to see that she won the Lifetime Achievement Award tonight, super well deserved.
Her speech was so incredibly touching. Even though she had laryngitis, she was still able to move the entire audience to tears. I personally really admired the way she so openly spoke about their new president. She described his behaviors and offensive speeches so well. My personal favorite part was when she talked about his disgusting portrayal of a journalist who happens to have special needs. This example hurts me to no end. How someone can be so hateful and well, inhumane, is beyond me. Leave it to Meryl Streep to make even all these comments elegant and insightful. She didn’t make it ugly or harsh, which sadly can be hard to do when talking about Trump… let’s be honest, here. The way she asked everyone to help maintain their country’s name was beyond amazing. She could not have been more right, each and every single person in that room shows just how diverse and amazing America really is.
To be honest, I don’t really know if I’ve found the right words to describe her speech. It pretty much rendered me speechless (no pun intended)… shocking for someone who has a blog, right?
One thing I do really want to add though, is I can’t not mention Viola Davis’ beautiful speech made to present the award. She described Meryl Streep perfectly and with such grace. She is yet another amazingly talented actress!
