The sad day has finally come, I’ve finished watching season 7 of Shameless, my newest favorite show. Definitely feels like quite the loss, almost like I lost a friend, a friend I used to spend quality time with every evening. So, what did I decide to do? Ramble about it here for all of you guys, of course! Hope ya’ll enjoy it!
To those of you who are in the middle and haven’t finished yet, do not worry, I will try my very best to keep spoilers out of this post. Shameless is definitely one of those shows that can be, well… controversial? It’s not for the faint of heart, that’s for sure. It’s a story about a family living in poverty under awful circumstances, it really doesn’t avoid anything. Everything goes, and that’s why I love it.

Reasons I loved it:
Challenges – I feel like this one is a bit tricky to explain, but here goes… There’s a scene in a more recent season where Ian (the gay kid) is on a first date with a new boyfriend. While chit chatting about ex’s, Ian mentions how his ex used to hit and swear at him. When the new date call this “domestic abuse”, I was so confused! Not at all, I mean this ex had his faults but being abusive was not one of them! This was just how they did things “in the south side”. Normally, domestic abuse would’ve been the perfect term for this, but somehow Shameless challenges and changes this perspective.
Characters – Seven main character in the family, all so different. No one is just “all bad” or “all good”, they’re all super complicated. Can’t stay mad at a character, because I know the other parts of them, the other parts that explain why they did what they did.
Raw/Honest – Nothing is hidden, even the theme song at the beginning of every episode shows the characters using the bathroom. That never happens! Also, you know all those usual taboo topics, words, etc. that people try not to talk about it in real life? Yep, they’re all there in the show, loud and proud. They definitely go for the shock factor.
Acting – Wow, just wow. Often in shows, there are some good actors and some well, not-so-good actors, but in this, I seriously feel like they are all so super talented! I mean seriously, with people like William H. Macy, Joan Cusack and Emmy Rossum, how could you go wrong?!
There are definitely so many more reasons I loved this show, but I would like to avoid boring my readers. Instead, I just wanna add one more tiny little topic to this post, also Shameless-related of course. Now that I’ve said all those great things about the show, maybe you guys can help me figure out why more people aren’t raving about it? I mean, I do totally get that it’s super hard to watch sometimes and can even be triggering for people, but are there any other reasons? I’ve done a bit of digging on this, and found that others are also wondering the same thing. The truth is (I’m guessing) that people might not like how raw the show is, because well, let’s face it, it shamelessly shows us how awful this family’s life is… can be fairly unpleasant to see up close and personal. Here’s a quote I found from The Atlantic, it shows you the kind of scenes there are in the show:
“Fiona is a young adult forced to be mom, trying her best to concoct a mixture of the life of a 25- year-old with that of a 55-year-old. As a result, Fiona has wild sex against the family’s peeling countertop with a stranger she meets while clubbing, but wakes up at seven to sign field trip permission slips and water-down the milk so it remains only slightly lumpy through another family breakfast.”
–> English Taylor of TheAtlantic
So, stuff like this… definitely not for everyone. For me? Well, let’s just say, Fiona, the character they’re talking about, she’s my favorite one. For others? I’m guessing it’s more like… Who would want to deal with the controversial decisions these people make? Who would want to see them? Let me tell you, sex is for sure not the worst thing you see… kids smoking, drinking, doing drugs… there’s even some crime-related activity. Shameless shows us how far this family has to go to make ends meet. It’s definitely not pretty.
What do you guys think? Would things like that make you not want to watch a show?
